I guess if you don't want it to go up & down when you use the remote you can remove the batteries.

It will go back on the arm that moves it. Just cycle the door opener with the door up and it will latch back together.

If you have a typical garage door that rolls up a set of tracks, it won't fall off. However, the door will be much heavier, and could be dangerous because the springs aren't there to assist in holding it open, or slowing it down as it closes. It could slam shut. It will also put additional strain on your garage door opener (if you have one) and could break the carriage.

I think the reason it is doing that is because somewhere there is resistance and the safety mech. is working. The rail may be bent slightly or you have something in the way that the door is running into when it tries to shut.

Does it try to shut but then somewhere along the way it goes back up?

There is a sensitivity dial usually up on the unit you might want to back it up a bit after you check for items that it may be hitting.

One time we had a extention cord running out the door and it messed the door up. We had to reduce the sensitivity knob!

Hope this helps!
It sounds like your door is really fine and that it is doing what it is supposed to do when things get in the way.

Also try shutting the power suppy off for 20 minutes and then turning it back on. That might reset something along the way as well.
